ASPI Senior Analyst in Defence Strategy Malcolm Davis says the Israeli airstrike in Lebanon’s Beirut could mark the beginning of a “wider war”.
An Israeli drone strike killed a senior Hamas figure in southern Beirut, in an area known for being home to members of Hezbollah.
“Everyone was expecting Hezbollah to launch attacks across northern Israel at the outset of the conflict – it didn’t happen,” Mr Davis told Sky News Australia.
“I think the Hezbollah was being restrained probably on orders of Iran.

“But I think that this attack in downtown Beirut has basically increased tensions, increased the risk that this war will escalate horizontally, in other words, spread geographically.”
