A TRAGIC accident claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman ‘hitchhiker’ after the motorcycle she was riding in was sideswiped by the dump truck along the national highway in Barangay Tuyan, City of Naga, Cebu around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024.
The deceased was identified as Thotsie Alvarez Suico, 24, from Barangay Tonggo, San Fernando, Cebu.
The driver of motorcycle, Kyle Lanas, 24, from Barangay Perrelos, Carcar City, sustained injuries.
According to Police Senior Master Sergeant Jake Catane, traffic investigator of the City of Naga Police Station, the victims were traveling home from Cebu City when the incident occurred.
The dump truck driven by Wilfredo Sarona Espina, 42, a married man from Sitio Guba, Barangay Cogon Cruz, Danao City, overtook them.
However, Espina allegedly miscalculated and hit the bike instead.
Lanas was flown to the side of the road, while Suico fell beneath the truck.
Suico’s head was crushed despite wearing a helmet.
“Dili man kusog ilang dagan sa motorsiklo og sa dump truck! Kanang natapsingan lang dangog man kaayo karsada kay sigeg uwan,” Catane said.
(The motorcycle and the dump truck were not speeding. The truck slightly hit the motorcycle. The collision happened because of the slippery road due to continuous rain).
Suico was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) at the hospital, while Lanas is being treated for his injuries.
Espina is currently being held at the City of Naga Police Station, waiting to settle the matter with the victims’ families.
If a settlement cannot be reached, Espina can be charged with reckless imprudence resulting to homicide. (GPL)
