Renewable energy provider SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet, Inc. (SNAP-Benguet) has reaffirmed its commitment to the indigenous peoples (IP) communities of Itogon, Benguet, with the recent turnover of additional benefits to the Tinongdan Indigenous Peoples Organization (TINPO) on December 18, 2024, and the Itogon Indigenous Peoples Organization (IIPO) on December 23, 2024.
The distribution of benefits followed a 60-40 agreement between the two organizations, with TINPO receiving 60% (PhP3,808,530.00) and IIPO receiving 40% (PhP2,539,020.00). These benefits are part of an ongoing partnership aimed at fostering development and preserving cultural heritage within the ancestral domains of the IP communities.
Long-Standing Commitment to IP Communities
Initially, SNAP-Benguet allocated PhP5 million for special corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects over three years, with the Tinongdan IPO designated as the primary beneficiary. Moving forward, PhP1 million will be awarded annually to barangays, as determined by both IPOs.
These additional benefits were the outcome of direct negotiations between SNAP-Benguet and the IP organizations. The funds aim to support development and capability-building programs, cultural preservation efforts, and similar initiatives in the communities that host SNAP-Benguet’s 140-MW Binga hydroelectric power plant. Starting in 2024, SNAP-Benguet has committed to providing the Itogon ancestral domain with approximately PhP10.3 million in benefits annually.
Gratitude from the IP Leaders
TINPO Chieftain Norberto Pacio expressed his appreciation: “On behalf of the COELs [Council of Elders], we want to express our gratitude to SNAP for the support. We now have the benefits that we have been waiting for.”
IIPO Chair Rosita Bargaso also shared her sentiments, saying, “Salamat sa SNAP at sana ay magtagal pa ang magandang samahan nating dalawa. (We thank SNAP and hope our partnership lasts even longer.)”
A History of Partnership and Sustainability
SNAP-Benguet took ownership and operation of the Binga hydroelectric facility in 2008 through a successful privatization bid. Since then, the company has maintained a collaborative relationship with the IP communities, resulting in agreements that support local development and cultural preservation. To date, SNAP-Benguet has provided PhP37.2 million in benefits to TINPO, underscoring its dedication to sustainable development and community empowerment while advancing renewable energy in the region.
