PAGASA warns of storm surge as ‘Kristine’ pounds Luzon


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is warning of “minimal to moderate” risk of storm surge within the next 48 hours in several provinces where Tropical Storm “Kristine” is having the strongest effect.

“A MINIMAL to MODERATE risk of storm surge may occur in the next 48 hours. However, residents along the coast are advised to take extra precautions due to high waves in some municipalities in the provinces of: Albay, Aurora, Cagayan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Isabela and Quezon,” PAGASA said in an advisory in its Facebook page.

“The public and the disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and precautionary measures, and watch for the next storm surge information to be issued at 8:00 PM today (October 22, 2024),” PAGASA added.

Meanwhile, Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 2 has been hoisted over Catanduanes; while signal no. 1 is hoisted over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon including Pollilo Islands, Masbate, Ticao Island, Burias Island, Marinduque, Romblon, and Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon.

Also under signal no. 1 are Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Biliran, and Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte including Siargao-Bucas Grande.

Strong to gale-force gusts due to Kristine and the northeasterly windflow are still forecast over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Palawan, Romblon, Aklan, Antique, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Southern Leyte, Zamboanga del Norte, Northern Mindanao, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Norte, Sarangani, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.
