Olympic champion hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg has been voted The Canadian Press male athlete of the year for 2024.
Katzberg made history at this year’s Paris Games by capturing Canada’s first Olympic gold in men’s hammer throw, and its first medal in the event since 1912.
He won the event on his first throw of 84.12 metres. No other competitor reached the 80-metre mark.

Katzberg was named Canada’s flag-bearer for the Paris closing ceremonies along with star swimmer Summer McIntosh, who was named the CP female athlete of the year on Thursday.
The 22-year-old from Nanaimo, B.C., captured 17 of the votes cast by sports editors, producers and reporters across Canada, narrowly beating basketball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (shay GIL’-juhs al-icks-AN’-dur) and Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.
Gilgeous-Alexander, a guard for the N-B-A’s Oklahoma City Thunder who won the award last year, received 14 votes while McDavid got 13.
Other past winners of the award include hockey players Sidney Crosby and Carey Price, basketball player Steve Nash and fellow track and field athletes Donovan Bailey, Andre De Grasse and Damian Warner.
