THE New Zealand Government has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Post-Graduate Manaaki Scholarships, focusing on Mindanao students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups.
Applications will be accepted from February 1 to 28 through the New Zealand International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme, with the scholarship beginning in early 2026.
During the Habi at Kape Media Forum on January 15, New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Catherine McIntosh, said that the scholarship program aims to foster academic excellence, cultural exchange, and stronger ties between the two regions while promoting inclusivity and providing opportunities for Mindanao communities.
McIntosh highlighted Mindanao’s young, dynamic population and the challenges they face, such as socio-economic inequality, political instability, and limited access to quality education. She said the scholarship program is a step toward uplifting local communities and contributing to the region’s long-term development.
The scholarship covers living expenses, health insurance, flights, and tuition, with additional mentorship and support for students to ensure academic success.
This year, 16 Philippine nationals will receive the scholarship, focusing on climate change, agriculture, renewable energy, disaster risk management, good governance, peace and conflict studies, and gender studies.
In 2024, 14 young Filipinos from Mindanao were awarded scholarships to pursue post-graduate degrees in New Zealand in 2025.
Founded in 1951, the New Zealand Scholarships Programme, administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MAT), has contributed to global development. The program is rooted in the Māori principle of manaakitanga, emphasizing hospitality, care, and respect for others.
“Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships empower problem solvers, change-makers, and highly capable individuals to pursue their potential to become leaders in their communities and countries. Scholars will gain a world-class education, an authentic New Zealand experience, and the tools to help the Philippines achieve the future it deserves,” McIntosh added. DEF
