Kidlat — when discussing his ever-evolving art — always mentions his “inner duwende,” his instinct that has always been his guide in pursuing his passions. He believes that all of us have our own “creative duwende” inside us and that for it to break free, we have to dig deep and find it. He encourages aspiring artists to chase their original ideas and to absolutely refrain from being copycats: “Your art should speak and help change the world; dare to be different” he said.
He puts emphasis on the word “kapwa” as a unique ingredient inherent in Filipinos and goes on to discuss other traits that define us that he believes the whole world needs. It is a joy to hear him have so much faith in our culture, especially in these challenging times.
After the staging of the VAF, this National Artist went on to unveil his installation art pieces in different areas of our multi-awarded Mactan Cebu International Airport. Now, when people depart from or arrive in Cebu, the genius of Kidlat Tahimik is there to warmly welcome them.
