A man who was arrested on firearm charges in Pennsylvania on Monday is a “strong person of interest” in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, New York City police said.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was spotted at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania by a patron at the fast food franchise who apparently recognized him from the images circulated by the NYPD following last week’s shooting and alerted police.
The prep school valedictorian was carrying a ghost gun believed to be the one used in the shooting, a suppresser, “multiple fraudulent IDs,” and a handwritten, three-page manifesto that allegedly slammed the health care system.
Mangione appeared in a Pennsylvania court on Monday evening for an arraignment, and has been charged with five state offenses.
During a press conference after the arrest, Pennsyvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned those who had celebrated the New York shooting, calling the gunman “no hero.”
“In America, we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” Shapiro said.
Officials said on Monday evening Mangione had ceased cooperating with officials, and would be detained pending the imminent filing of charges in New York.
Officer describes arresting Luigi Mangione
Officials on Monday commended Tyler Frye, a new Altoona Police Department officer who had spent less than a year with the force, for being part of the team that arrested Luigi Mangione, the person of interest in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“He was wearing a blue medical mask,” Frye said during a press conference on Monday, describing the moment of the arrest. “We asked him to pull it down. Me and my partner recognized him immediately, just from what we saw in the media, photos, videos.”
“We didn’t think twice about it,” Frye added. “We knew that was our guy.”
New York Mayor Eric Adams FaceTimed with Frye after the arrest, police said.
“It feels good to get a guy like that off the street,” Frye said of the arrest.
