Dear Sea Salt of Bulacan,
Yes, only if it is excessive. Salt per se, is not associated with cancer. But, if you consume it excessively, then you have the problem.
Let me show a study conducted by nutritionists from the Center for Public Health at the University of Vienna, who examined the database of 471,144 adults in the United Kingdom, called the UK Biobank over 11 years and they discovered that people from the UK who added salt to most of their meals have 41 percent more chances to develop stomach cancer than those who used the topping sparingly. I believe that this study could be in support of the older studies, which suggested that excessive salt might erode the protective coating on the stomach, leading to damage to the tissues and resulting in cancerous mutations.
So, how much salt are you supposed to consume in a day? Well, that is no more than 2,300 mg per day, as per the recommendation of the FDA, or about one teaspoon of table salt.
It’s sad to say that we don’t often realize how much salt we are taking in daily. For instance, if we consume a noodle soup, then, we are most likely getting around 800 mg of salt.
But, remember you are not only eating noodle soup for a day. You are also eating other foods.
This all could add up and then, you are also reaching out for that salt shaker. So, just calculate the numbers and you might be surprised, at how much salt you are getting.
Good luck!
