She was on a quad bike with a friend when it hit a fence and sent her hurtling down the steep edge – before landing on top of her.

The young Mancunian was airlifted to hospital with a split liver, a torn spleen, severe internal bleeding and fluid in her lungs.

Courtney had saved up for a solo backpacking trip to the island of Naxos in the Aegean Sea.

She met up with friends who were hiking and decided to join one of them for a ride on a rented quad bike.

Her mum Debbie told how the road became “very narrow” – forcing Courtney’s friend to pull over to let a car pass.

The friend then pulled “too hard” on the revs, which sent the quad bike flying into the fence.

Courtney fell off the quad bike and tumbled 13ft down the ravine before the quad bike landed on top of her.

Debbie told the Manchester Evening News: “She had an oxygen mask and internal bleeding, so we booked the first flight out.

“We reached Athens hospital and Courtney’s first words were ‘I thought I was gonna have to die alone’ – this was heartbreaking.

“We’re all distraught, I have panic attacks when I have to leave and need to gather myself to be strong.”

Brave Debbie hailed the “amazing” doctors and locals – adding Courtney’s life was saved by her bike helmet.

She said Courtney is now “getting stronger” six days on from the horror crash.

The family are now desperate to fly Courtney home for treatment – but would have to fork up £36,000 for a private air ambulance.

A commercial flight with medical assistance and a seat for Courtney by herself would cost around £5,000.

Courtney’s sister Chloe has now launched a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for the transport.

On the page, Chloe writes: “I’m raising funds to get my little sister home from Greece.

“She was travelling alone after spending months working to save up and working hard all her life to achieve high grades.

“After graduating from university she wanted to enjoy some time in her favourite country doing what she enjoys most… travelling!”

Chloe added: “The hospitals have advised to get Courtney home to the UK for the best possible outcome and treatment.

“My mum and dad are there with Courtney trying to comfort and looked after her the best they can.

“We are trying to raise any funds possible to help pay towards her medical treatment, expenses and eventually to bring her home.

“Courtney does have medical insurance however due to unforeseen circumstances they’re refusing to pay out.

“Please if it’s only £1 or anything every little helps we just need her home safe and sound. Thank you.”
