It was less surprising to see that Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, topped the list compiled by numbeo.com.

Venezuela has been in the midst of a political and economic crisis for years. The previously oil-dependent economy has plunged into crisis due to a large drop in oil prices after 2013.

Hyperinflation and authoritarian leadership have resulted in millions fleeing the country. Amid the crisis, crime in Caracas has soared.
