GP representatives around the UK have told the BMA to “use the threat of mass resignation to improve the NHS offer to practices,” arguing that “being prepared to walk away may be more effective than industrial action.”

The motion,1 passed on 24 May at the UK conference of local medical committees in Newport, Wales, also instructed the BMA’s General Practitioners Committee (GPC) to “develop viable alternatives” to the general medical services (GMS) contract, including “actively supporting GP practices to work outside the NHS.”
