Fire brigades and emergency services rushed to the site along with a local police team who are now investigating the cause of the accident.

It is being speculated that the explosion could have been triggered by sparks from a nearby welding setup.

Karthik Raja, 27, died in the accident while another worker, P Sivanesan, 27, was rushed to the nearest hospital after suffering severe burns.

M K Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu, expressed his condolences to the deceased man’s family.

He also urged hospital authorities to give the best care to Sivanesan who has been admitted to the hospital.

“Appropriate compensation will soon be given to the kin of the deceased and the injured too,” an official government release noted.

It comes after at least eight people were killed and 80 others injured in a massive explosion at a fireworks factory in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Dozens of ambulances were deployed almost immediately, according to reports, with army helicopters also requested.

The injured victims were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital to receive urgent medical treatment.

Eyewitnesses reported that several individuals remain trapped within the firecracker facility following the blast, with the blaze reaching as high as 50ft.

The sheer magnitude of the explosion was so immense that its impact could be felt within a radius of 15-16 kilometres.

A terrifying short clip showed people running away from the fire scene to save their lives.

“It was like a feeling of a strong quake. We ran out and witnessed a blaze,” Madan, an eyewitness said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives and announced a compensation of INR 200,000 (£1,918) from the PM’s National Relief Fund to each of the deceased’s next of kin.

PM Modi has also promised INR 50,000 (£479) for the injured in this tragic incident.

“Distressed by the loss of lives due to the mishap at a cracker factory in Harda, Madhya Pradesh,” he said. “Condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones.
