Zelensky Says Situation in Kharkiv “Extremely Difficult” as Russia Intensifies Assault In Region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the embattled region of Kharkiv on May 16, and met with senior commanders as their troops grappled with a renewed offensive in the northeast and fierce assaults elsewhere along the front line. “After meeting with Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky and other top military leaders in Kharkiv, I can affirm that the situation in the Kharkiv region is generally manageable,” President Zelensky stated on social media. He also paid a visit to wounded soldiers at a hospital in Kharkiv, acknowledging the significant challenges faced by the military in the area. Russia launched a major ground assault into the Kharkiv region putting pressure on Ukraine’s already depleted troops. Reports showed, between May 9-15, Russia gained at least 257 square kilometres of territory in the Kharkiv region.
