The Philippines’ national security adviser has called for the expulsion of Chinese diplomats over an alleged leak of a phone conversation related to disputed territory in the South China Sea. In a statement issued on May 10, 2024, Eduardo Ano accused the Chinese embassy in Manila of “repeated acts of engaging and dissemination of disinformation, misinformation and malinformation”, to sow division. Ano was referring to a news report about an alleged leak of a call between a Chinese diplomat and a Filipino admiral discussing the dispute, with a transcript that showed the admiral agreeing to concessions with China. In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian demanded that the Philippines ensure that Chinese diplomats in Manila are able to perform their duties normally.
