Sage Geosystems, a US-based geopressured geothermal systems (GGS) developer, is set to commence a new geothermal initiative for the US Army and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU).
The initiative, which will be executed at Fort Bliss, will see Sage Geosystems using its proprietary GGS technology to provide clean and secure energy to the base.
Sage Geosystems will also investigate the potential of deploying its hybrid technologies, for instance energy storage, direct thermal use, and dispatchable power to enhance energy resilience at low cost.
The company said its approach mainly involves using hot dry rock, which is claimed to be a more prevalent geothermal resource compared to traditional hydrothermal formations.
In early 2022, Sage Geosystems also demonstrated that its GGS design could deliver commercially viable and cost-effective new generation geothermal energy when deployed in the field.
All these efforts further contribute to the US Army Climate Strategy’s (ACS) objectives of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030; installation of a microgrid across each of its base by 2035; and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

In a move that will further the deployment of GGS technology, Sage Geosystems plans to commission a 3MW commercial EarthStore energy storage facility later this year within the ERCOT South Load Zone of Texas.
This development is expected to be a significant milestone for the company and the broader geothermal energy sector.
According to Sage Geosystems, the concept of “geothermal anywhere” presents a significant opportunity for the US Department of Defense, beginning with achieving energy independence and resilience of military bases across the globe.
The company highlighted that the geothermal carbon-free microgrids offer scalability, safety, and dispatchability, which are crucial for military operations.
