The Netherlands’ military procurement organisation Command Materiel and IT (COMMIT) has finalised an agreement with Thales to purchase seven additional Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact (GM200 MM/C) radars.

This agreement, which comes with an additional option to procure two more systems, builds on the initial deal signed between COMMIT and Thales in 2019 for nine GM200 MM/C radars.

In March 2024, Thales unveiled the first series of GM200 MM/C for the Dutch Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The partnership has resulted in a radar system tailored to the operational requirements of the military force.

GM200 MM/C is engineered to address both conventional and emerging threats, such as drones, by providing rapid and early detection capabilities essential for safeguarding national sovereignty and valuable assets.

The system is equipped with advanced 4D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology and ‘dual-axis multi-beam’ capabilities. It offers a range of up to 400km and can be deployed in a modern multi-mission warfare environment.

For the Dutch armed forces, this radar system is mounted on the Scania Gryphus vehicles, enhancing its tactical and mobile advantages.

Thales said that the GM200 MM/C can be set up and operational within one minute upon reaching its destination, and it can be relocated with equal speed.

COMMIT project manager Jarno Ursum said: “The Dutch MoD has great confidence in the capabilities of this new radar. With this additional procurement we continue the strong cooperation with Thales that has been basis for the development of this radar.”

GM200 MM/C is part of the Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission family, which is known for its ability to identify smaller, faster, and agile targets at greater distances while maintaining high tactical mobility and rapid deployment times.

It supports simultaneous detection, tracking, and classification of various threats, including missiles, uncrewed aerial vehicles, rockets, artillery, and mortar, aircraft, and helicopters.

The radar system also provides extended time-on-target to the operators for collecting relevant data on incoming threats.
