According to a “24 Oras” report by Maki Pulido, several groups went around six chapels while repeatedly hitting their backs in acts of penance.

“Tradisyon na po namin na mamanata at magpenitensya alang-alang sa Panginoon,” said flagellant Regie Sanchez.

(It has been our tradition to pay devotion and do penance in the name of the Lord)

Father Randy Flores said that there was no need to hurt oneself to get forgiveness from God.

Flores.

(It’s against respect for themselves, their bodies as a temple of the Holy Spirit… We should emulate His example. Apply what He taught us about loving our fellows as we love ourselves)

Meanwhile, the Department of Health reminded flagellants to ensure that they are vaccinated with anti-tetanus shots and that they are using sanitized items to avoid infection.— Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
