NEW DELHI: According to a report by Pakistan Joint Investigation Team (JIT), the personal data of 2.7 million Pakistanis was unlawfully accessed with assistance from National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) offices located in Multan, Peshawar and Karachi.
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) instructed the interior ministry to investigate the data leak alongside the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and military intelligence.
According to the JIT report, the pilfered data was transferred from Multan to Peshawar and then to Dubai. Subsequently, it was sold in Argentina and Romania. The report suggests disciplinary action against multiple senior officers of NADRA.
Headed by the FIA Director Cybercrime, the JIT was formed to investigate a cyberattack in March 2023, during which personal information of citizens, including military personnel, was accessed and stolen. Following the completion of the inquiry, the JIT presented its findings to then-caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar.
The caretaker premier instructed NADRA to take necessary actions based on the report’s findings and recommendations. Proposed measures for safeguarding citizens’ data include regulatory actions and technological upgrades.
In response to the Prime Minister’s directives, authorities have implemented compliance measures. The report underscores that these measures will enhance the delivery of emergency services and bolster standard database security, as per The News International.
