The Princess of Wales felt “awful” about releasing an edited family photo of herself and her three children for Mother’s Day, according to a royal insider.
Kate said she had just “tried to make it the best it could be” because she knew how important it was for it to be “a nice picture”, The Times reported.
The photo shows Kate Middleton smiling surrounded by Prince Louis, Prince George and Princess Charlotte in what is the first official picture of the princess since she underwent abdominal surgery in January.
However, within hours of it being posted on social media, picture agencies began recalling the photo citing fears it had been “manipulated”.
Eagle-eyed royal fans pointed out a number of editing failures, including that the sleeve of Princess Charlotte’s cardigan did not line up.
It comes as she was pictured leaving Windsor Castle with Prince William just hours after apologising for editing the photo, which caused more speculation over her wellbeing after having the operation. The palace has been put under pressure to release the original Mother’s Day photo.

Whoopi Goldberg defends Kate amid Mother’s Day photo row
Whoopi Goldberg has defended the Princess of Wales after she released an edited family photo of herself and her three children for Mother’s Day. Discussing the royal row on ABC’s talk show The View, Goldberg suggested she knows very few people who don’t “manipulate” their snaps. “I’m sorry, I know very few people who don’t manipulate their own photos. I mean all you gotta do is swipe. Those editors swipe, God knows people look how those photos look,” she said on Monday 11 March. Goldberg’s co-host Sara Haines, however, argued that there’s a difference between “filtering” and Photoshopping a picture.

Family photo blunder more likely ‘cock up’ than conspiracy, former Royal aide claims
Princess Kate’s edited Mother’s Day photo blunder is more likely a “cock up” than a conspiracy, the Queen’s former communications secretary said.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4, Simon Lewis said the mistake was very serious but it was most likely a “cock up” rather than conspiracy.
But David Yelland, former editor of The Sun, claimed it was a “very serious” mistake and amounted to a deepfake.

Prince William took photo on £2,900 camera
Prince William took Kate’s Mother’s Day photograph in just a 40-minute window on Friday before the Princess edited it twice in Photoshop to “make it the best it can be” it emerged.
The Prince of Wales took the picture of his smiling family on a £2,900 Canon camera before Kate made edits to improve the photo ahead of its public release on Instagram on Sunday.
Sky News said a technician at the broadcaster had analysed the photo’s metadata to reveal that it was saved in Adobe Photoshop twice on an Apple Mac on Friday and Saturday and the picture was taken on a Canon 5D mark IV, which retails at £2,929.99, and used a Canon 50mm lens, priced at £1,629.99.

Comment: Kate’s apology over THAT photo has only made things worse
With a heart-warming portrait of the Princess of Wales and her family, Kensington Palace has contrived to turn a ‘good news’ story into one about trust and truth in the monarchy – and has only fuelled the conspiracy theories it was supposed to shut down, says Sean O’Grady.
