HBO Renews Original Drama Series “True Detective” Fifth Season

HBO has officially greenlit the highly acclaimed original drama series True Detective for a fifth season. True Detective: Night Country, the latest season, concluded its run on February 19 (February 18 in the U.S.). Additionally, as part of a new multiyear overall deal with HBO, Issa López will develop exclusive content for HBO and Max, including the upcoming season of True Detective.

Set against the backdrop of Ennis, Alaska, in True Detective: Night Country, the eight men running the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace as the long winter night descends. Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) must delve into the darkness within themselves and unearth the haunting truths hidden beneath the eternal ice to crack the case. The season features a stellar cast including Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes, with guest appearances by Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand.

In the U.S., True Detective: Night Country has been lauded by critics, with The Ringer dubbing it the “first can’t-miss show of 2024,” while Rolling Stone praised it as “a gripping mystery from creator Issa Lopez… True Detective is must-see TV again.” New York Magazine hailed the new season as “appointment viewing [with] powerhouse performances.”

The creative team behind True Detective: Night Country includes Showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer Issa López, along with star and executive producer Jodie Foster. Executive producers include Mari Jo Winkler, Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak for PASTEL, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Nic Pizzolatto. Producers are Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford, and Sam Breckman.
