Some 40% of patients admitted to hospital with asthma are not receiving timely follow-up in primary care after being discharged, a study1 has reported.

Follow-up care in England is particularly lacking among black ethnic minority groups, who were between 27% and 54% less likely to get this care than those from white ethnic groups, research published in the British Journal of General Practice suggests.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham analysed primary care records from 17 457 patients aged 5 and over who were admitted to hospital in England with an asthma attack between 1 January 2017 and 31 December 2019.
