During a heated exchange with Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked to “apologize” to parents of children who have been exploited on social media.

“No one should have to go through the things that your families have suffered and this is why we have invested so much and are going to continue doing industry-leading efforts to make sure no one has to go through the things that your families have had to suffer,” Zuckeberg told parents in the gallery.

The testimony comes after Sen. Dick Durbin, the Judiciary Committee’s Democratic chairman said that while some tech companies had made changes to protect children from online predators, the efforts did not go far enough.

“It is clear that we need legislation because the tech industry has failed on its own to protect our kids,” he said.
