RSV vaccines administered in error to infants and pregnant people, CDC reports

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of administration errors of unlicensed RSV vaccines in pregnant women and other people and infants, raising concerts of possible adverse effects.

As of 17 January there were 128 reports received by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of pregnant women receiving the GSK RSV vaccine (Arexvy), the CDC said in a communication to clinicians.1 GSK abandoned the development of a maternal RSV vaccine after a clinical trial had shown an increase of preterm births (6.8% in the vaccine arm to 4.9% in the placebo arm) and associated neonatal deaths.2 Pfizer’s Abrysvo is the only RSV vaccine approved for use in pregnancy.
