DepEd: Teachers training for rollout of revised K-10 curriculum to start this week

The training of teachers for the start of the phased implementation of the recalibrated Kindergarten to Grade 10 (K-10) curriculum of the basic education will start this last week of January, the Department of Education (DepEd) said Sunday.

DepEd deputy spokesperson Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas said that the training will be specifically for teachers of learners in Kinder, Grade 1, Grade 4, and Grade 7—the grade levels where the phased implementation of the revised K-10 curriculum will begin in School Year (SY) 2024-2025.

“Mag-start na this week ang ating training of trainers para sa rollout ng ating bagong curriculum. Lahat ng guro na magtuturo sa Kinder, Grades 1, 4, and 7 next school year ay mate-train na sila starting this last week of January hanggang matapos ‘yung ating school year,” he said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.

(The training of trainers for the rollout of our new curriculum will start this week. All teachers who will teach Kinder, Grades 1, 4, and 7 next school year will be trained starting this last week of January until the end of our school year.)

Currently, the new MATATAG K-10 curriculum is being piloted in 35 schools nationwide.

Five of these schools are in Metro Manila, particularly in Malabon City. Five each are also in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Visayas, Soccsksargen, and Caraga.

“Binigay natin ang bagong curriculum sa Kinder, Grades 1, 4, and 7. Ito rin ay nag-undergo ng ongoing research kung paano pa magiging mas mabuti at seamless ang ating pag-implement this coming school year nationwide for all public schools and private schools,” Bringas said.

Under the revised K-10 curriculum which was launched in August 2023, the number of learning competencies was reduced by 70% from around 11,700 to 3,600.

DepEd also cut down the number of subjects, with greater emphasis given on the development of Kinder to Grade 3 learners’ foundational skills—such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said that the revised curriculum aims to address the problems that were seen in the review of the old K-10 curriculum of the K-12 program.

This curriculum will be taught next to Grades 2, 5, and 8 learners in SY 2025-2026; Grades 3, 6 and 9 in SY 2026-2027; and Grade 10 in SY 2027-2028. —KG, GMA Integrated News
