UNRWA has around 13,000 staff in Gaza, almost all of them Palestinians. They range from teachers, in schools run by the angency, to doctors and other medical staff.

In its October 7 attack, Hamas broke through the security fence surrounding Gaza and stormed nearby Israeli communities, killing about 1,200 people and kidnapping some 250.

While some of the kidnapped have been released as part of transfer swaps with Israel, around 100 are still being held.
