Gastroenterologist who was struck off for false pay claims rejoins GMC register after “journey of remediation”

A doctor who was struck off the UK medical register for making false pay claims in 2011, who then went on to become a leading gastroenterologist in Sudan, has regained his right to practise in Britain after the civil war in Sudan made him a refugee.

Adil Elamin’s “journey of remediation” had impressed a medical practitioners tribunal convened to consider his restoration, said the tribunal chair, Rachel Birks, and had reassured it that any repetition of his former dishonesty was “highly unlikely.”

Elamin was struck off after he claimed 495 hours of pay as a locum consultant gastroenterologist for Mid-Staffordshire Hospital NHS Trust, when in fact he had worked only 319 hours. The false claims, which cost the locum agency £11 440, were submitted in 2008. …
