Doubts over use of Red Sea until Houthi rebels stop their ‘anti-ship missile campaign’

Griffith Asia Institute Visiting Fellow Dr Peter Layton says he doesn’t think anyone will be using the Red Sea for the next week until it can be sure the Houthis have stopped their “anti-ship missile campaign”.

The US and UK successfully conducted strikes against a number of targets in Yemen in response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea.

“It was interesting that Russia and China abstained because they’re the big winners if you like of this in a sense,” Dr Layton told Sky News Australia.

“Because the Russians need the Red Sea so that they can export all to India.

“And the Chinese of course need the Red Sea … that is the fastest route from Shanghai into Europe.”
