Emergency services raced against time to rescue all passengers and crew from a plane that was later engulfed in flames, at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
Japanese authorities are investigating how the Japan Airlines passenger plane collided with a Coastguard aircraft as it was landing. The Coastguard plane was set to deliver aid to areas of Japan affected by an earthquake that hit on New Year’s Day.
Following the impact, dramatic CCTV footage shows the Airbus A350 ablaze as it travelled at speed down the runway.
Professor Graham Braithwaite, Director of Transport Systems and professor of Accident Investigations at Cranfield University, explains how emergency services had to face very challenging conditions as the fuel started leaking from the plane.
