Former Labor senator Stephen Conroy has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “resign” because he’s “so desperate” to keep his position and is “putting the lives of Israelis at risk”.

Mr Conroy’s comments come after Israel’s Ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of contradictory messages over the war with Hamas.

Mr Maimon says the Jewish homeland’s fight against terrorism has been held to a different standard from Australia’s other wars.

“You can still support the State of Israel … but Netanyahu is protecting his own personal position,” Mr Conroy told Sky News Australia.

“He should resign and allow someone else to take charge who doesn’t have a completely ludicrous position of ‘I’m going to wipe Hamas out’ – that’s like saying the entire Western world were going to wipe the Taliban out – well, that didn’t go so well.

“I want to see all the people in Hamas held to account, but to say that we’re going to keep fighting until we wipe Hamas out is just a meaningless statement and shows he’s so desperate to hang on to his own job that he’s putting the lives of Israelis at risk.”
