The Philippines and Australia have discussed pursuing joint patrols in the South China Sea. Trillions of dollars in trade pass through the disputed waterway each year. The region is home to a wealth of natural resources and fisheries. Parts of it are claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan. China, though, claims almost the entire South China Sea. The Philippines has been ramping up attempts to counter what it sees as Beijing’s increasing aggressiveness in the waters.
