In a video statement addressed to Israel, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky blamed the country’s “neutrality” in the Russia-Ukraine war for the alliance between Iran and Russia.

His statement followed last week’s reports of Iranian-made drones hitting Ukrainian targets, which according to the US was made possible due to Iranian military personnel operating in Crimea.

In the video, Zelensky explained that Ukraine is beating Russia’s army on the ground but does not have Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defence system, leading to Russia buying Shahed-136 “kamikaze drones” from Iran to exploit vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s air defences.

Last week Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz ruled out sending offensive military equipment to Ukraine and added that they are only considering sending early alert systems to the country to assist with warning population centres of imminent air strikes.
