Brazil’s consulate in Hong Kong has set up a dedicated team to pursue more local science and technology collaborations, the country’s envoy in the city has said, urging the financial hub to use his nation as a “starting point” for tapping into the rest of South America.
Manuel Innocencio De Lacerda Santos Jnr, the country’s consul general for the city, also said Brazilian companies had shown an interest in the Hong Kong market, noting at least six business delegations had visited the city in the past four months. But he added that cultural ties remained weak.
“Hong Kong’s strategic location as a global innovation hub makes Hong Kong a valuable partner for Brazil to expand its global footprint, especially in the start-up sector,” he said in an exclusive interview with the Post.
Santos revealed the consulate had earlier this year set up a section dedicated to building partnerships in the science and technology sector, and had been reaching out to the city’s universities to promote incubation programmes in Brazil.
The city’s Science Park and Cyberport also provided opportunities for Brazilian tech companies looking to connect with investors, enter new markets and collaborate on research and development, he said.
