The Philippines is one of the top coconut producers worldwide, currently ranked as the second-largest exporter in the global market. Despite this, the coconut industry is facing significant challenges. According to the Philippine Coconut Authority, 20% of the country’s coconut trees are aging and unproductive. In response, Coco Mama, the nation’s leading local gata brand, has launched the “Save Our Coconuts” project, aiming to address this issue and support the industry’s long-term sustainability.
Coco Mama’s “Save Our Coconuts” project is dedicated to revitalizing the Philippine coconut industry by distributing 100,000 high-quality coconut seedlings over the next five years. This initiative seeks to replace aging trees and ensure a sustainable income for smallholder Filipino coconut farmers, contributing to the long-term growth and stability of the coconut sector.
“Through Coco Mama’s ‘Save Our Coconuts’ project, we are dedicated to providing quality seedlings to smallholder farming communities in the region. On World Coconut Day, Coco Mama launched its initiative in General Santos City, South Cotabato, with a tree-planting event featuring brand ambassador Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo. The activity was supported by representatives from the Philippine Coconut Authority, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office – General Santos City, the Local Government Unit of General Santos City, Century Pacific Agricultural Ventures Inc., and local coconut farmers.
Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo expressed her gratitude and honor in being part of the campaign. She remarked, “It’s easy to overlook that our daily staples, like gata, are the result of the hard work of our dedicated farmers. With the ‘Save Our Coconuts’ project, I’m not only promoting our beloved traditional and nutritious gata dishes to Filipino families but also making a meaningful impact on the lives of those who harvest the food we enjoy at our tables.”
