The provost of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will step down in January despite the recent renewal of his contract, marking the third departure of a senior management member from the city’s second-oldest varsity in over a year.
CUHK outgoing chief Rocky Tuan Sung-chi called Provost Alan Chan Kam-leung his “most trustworthy partner” and “dear friend”.
Announcing the provost’s departure on Tuesday, the institution’s council secretary said: “Professor Chan, for personal reasons, recently decided not to take up the second term of appointment.
“As a result, Professor Chan will step down as the university’s provost upon completing his first term on December 31.”
The secretary said that the council approved in April 2024 Chan’s reappointment as provost for a further five-year term starting in January next year.
Tuan, who also resigned as head of the university, thanked Chan for his dedication and commitment over the past five years, describing him as “a true gentleman and scholar”.
