A teenage girl stole and sold one million yuan-worth (US$140,000) of her mother’s jewellery for just 60 yuan (US$8) so she could buy lip studs and earrings.
The shocking case has ignited an intense debates on parenting on mainland social media.
The incident unfolded in Shanghai when the mother, surnamed Wang, discovered that her teenage daughter, surnamed Li, had unwittingly sold her jewellery, valued at about one million yuan, for only a fraction of its worth.
She reported the case to the Wanli police station of Putuo Public Security Bureau.
Investigations revealed that Li, who was said to be experiencing an “adolescent rebellion,” had taken the items from home to get some pocket money.
A video trending online revealed that the stolen jewellery included jade bracelets, necklaces, and other gemstone pieces.
