IN A bid to incorporate and strengthen the advancement of IT education across the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) in collaboration with the University of Southeastern Philippines (Usep) launched the second ChedX2.0 Summit: “Expand, Exceed, Exemplify”.
Slated from December 4 to 5, 2024, a total of 25 speakers from the various academe and higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country gathered for the annual IT National Summit, with this year’s theme “Building Synergy: Aligning IT Education with the Industry.
Meanwhile, the summit brought together around 500 participants from professionals in the industry and different schools to discuss ways to improve the nation’s IT education standards.
During the sidelines of the summit on Wednesday, December 4, Ched Chairman and Secretary Dr. J. Prospero “Popoy” de Vera III said that the Commission seeks to inspire growth, promote excellence, and demonstrate the boundless potential of IT education in the modern-day.
“This is really a platform for all industries and the government to talk with each other, find consensus, and work together to promote the IT sector. It is our commitment to ensure that our university graduates are industry-ready,” the official said, adding that there is a need for everyone to collaborate as education adapts to rapid educational advancements and evolving workforce demands.
When asked about the job market and career opportunities in the IT sector in the country, de Vera answered that graduates of IT programs are in great demand and the Philippines’ IT sector is flourishing. Particularly in fields like software development, technical assistance, and IT administration, the nation has grown in popularity as an outsourcing location for multinational corporations.
In 2023, Ched in collaboration with NU Asia Pacific College, hosted the first Information Technology Summit, “ChedX 2023: Experience, Exchange, Explore,” at the SM Megatrade Hall in Megamall, Mandaluyong City.
With the rapid evolution of the tech industry, IT education in the Philippines has started focusing on emerging fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, Data Science and Big Data, Cloud Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
