bmj;387/oct16_14/q2210/FAF1faBrian Wilkey was born in Bristol in 1934 and attended Bristol Grammar School before going to Exeter College, Oxford. He graduated in 1958. He continued his medical career at University College Hospital (UCH), where he met his wife Ailsa.He undertook national service in Herentals, Belgium, before returning to UCH and a career in anaesthesia. Brian then went to Massachusetts General as a clinical fellow, and then to Harvard General. On his return to the UK, he was appointed consultant anaesthetist at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, and associate lecturer in anaesthesia at Cambridge University. At Cambridge he and other colleagues set up the obstetric anaesthetic service at Mill Road and Rosie maternity hospitals.He retired from medical practice in January 2009. In retirement he followed his interests in music, mainly opera; gardening; and walking holidays in Europe with close friends.He is survived by Ailsa and two children.
