Aging farmers, low wages, and the vanishing youth in agriculture

Paulino Zafra, a 73-year-old rice farmer who has been tending the fields in Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, since the 1960s, currently earns P350 a day for his hard work.

The low wages in agriculture are driving them to seek higher-paying jobs, creating a noticeable gap in the younger workforce in farming.

According to a 2021 survey by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), farmers continue to experience the highest rates of poverty among the basic sectors.
